Medical Website Design
Medical Website Design is a key element in creating an effective online platform for a doctors practice.
A doctor’s website design needs to perform several tasks very quickly. These include using design efficiently to
- Tell visitors they are in the right place,
- Engage visitors and start answering their questions,
- Provide a sense of credibility and professionalism,
- Create easy navigation and readable content,
- Focus on your outcomes (to book, call, read or refer), and
Function perfectly on mobile devices.
Medical website design should be consistent with your practice logo and brand and can work towards helping to communicate many other outcomes.
Medical Website Design Challenges
Each Medical Website niche has their unique challenges and requires specific skills and experience. Web design for general practitioners has different audiences, processes and services to a specialist or allied health professionals website.
A suitable website design firm needs to demonstrate good design and have a proven track record. That means designing user friendly websites that have appropriate health information and are search engine optimised.
Clear Target Audience
One challenge is you may be talking to different audiences. Some medical websites have multiple targets that can include patients, referring doctors or allied health practitioners, parents or carers.
Each target persona will have different motivations and attributes to consider like their age, sex, role or location.
Not “Too Salsey”
A common website design challenge that often arises is the need to be commercially effective without looking ‘too salesy’. Experience has taught us many useful devices that can overcome this barrier.
Professional Medical Web Designs
We believe to look professional your website needs to look up to date. Some clients have 15 year old websites, but even with a one year old website, you are looking at the past.
The fact is that both design and technology platforms change quickly. Modern website design for healthcare professionals needs to be adaptive and, above all, function perfectly on mobile devices.
Another key design element in creating a professional website is to not overwhelm or confuse your visitors and target audience. Clean, simple designs framed in a logical layout and using suitable and sympathetic colours are part art and part science.
How To Create Medical Website Designs
Medical website design is a creative process and, by its nature, is iterative. Before we start the actual design process, we agree on several elements. These include
- The conditions your treat and the services you offer (via the Sitemap Process),
- Your target audience and what you what visitors to do when they visit your website,
- Your existing branding, websites or colour preferences
- Any other design guidance such as websites or design elements you may like
These elements help form early design brief ideas. Often there are other design elements that need to be taken into consideration. Other web design considerations include headlines, design element priorities, usability, engagement, colour usage and spacing.
Stages of Website Design
After the design elements are agreed, the design elements are divided into sections. Examples of design sections are here – home page design sections page.
This allows us to easily define the design requirements in the website design brief.
From the web design brief, it only takes a few days before the initial design is presented to the client. The design can be reviewed in all three modes (desktop, tablet and mobile).
Clients are asked to comment on their website design. During this review process clients offer feedback. The design team then reviews this feedback and performs the required design changes.
This creative design process only takes a week or so. Typically, each design iteration takes a few days and may only require a few versions. This iterative approach ensures our clients receive the design they want to help achieve the outcomes of their practice.
For the most part, each website design iteration is a step toward its final unique custom practice website design.
After Website Design Approval
After Design approval, we build the website and incorporate the content we have drafted in line with the previously approved sitemap. We also seek client-supplied content such as CVs and images of the team or the practice.
The website project moves to the Pre-Live website review stage. This is where the client can request further edits or give Go-Live approval. Edits can be requested or performed via the website editor directly, the website comment system, or a shared MS Word document.
Once approved, we make the website live and follow another Go-Live Process.
Medical Website Design Support
The design of effective and professional medical websites requires advanced design skills. A medical or hospital website requires specific features and devices that are both compliant and appropriate.
The medical website design and development process involves our team of designers, writers and technicians who remove confusion and wasted time.
After Go-Live we offer ongoing support that can include SEO, Editing or Practice Marketing support. We understand that your practice website is a living project, and we are here to help.
